Horse Power : On the Ranch and On the Road

Horses have always been important to Douglas County's rural heritage. They were used on ranches for labor, transportation and power. A good horse could be used to plow the fields, corral the cattle, and get the family to a nearby ranch for a dance. One reason why "horse thieves" were considered so vile was that they robbed people not only of their property, but their livelihood as well.
