.....Round Top School (District 31) was originally located at the base of Round Top Mountain. In 1897 it was relocated to the northwest side of the Happy Canyon exit on what is now I-25 because there was already a school near Round Top Mountain (Dewey). The Scholtz, Walker, Lowell and Chase Families attended school there, and Josephine (Lowell) Marr recalled many happy memories there in her book Douglas County, a Historical Journey. .....The attendance was never large, and sometimes the school was closed altogether. Miss Sarah Gleason taught there for one year in 1927-28. That year the school was held for most of the year in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Grogan. Mr. Grogan was the chauffeur for a Miss Martin who had been a secretary for Mr. Daniels (of Daniels Park fame and Daniels and Fisher Department Store in Denver. She was quite wealthy, and the students at Round Top that year were, for the most part, children of her employees. When she decided to move back to Denver, they went with her. Miss Gleason reopened the Round Top School building in the spring, and school continued there for the rest of the year with the teacher and the two remaining students, who rightfully belonged in another district. As the year drew to a close, Miss Gleason realized that the school would not need to be re-opened next year, so, like her previous teaching assignment (Upper Lake Gulch) this school too closed. She was hired to teach in Sedalia for the next year, and was happy to move back to her hometown. .....The Round Top School was closed permanently in the 1940's and the children were sent to Castle Rock. |
